PAYG Smart Meter Problems: Top-Ups, Emergency Credit and Debt
If your top-up has not landed, your emergency credit is not working, your meter is eating credit too quickly or debt has appeared that you do not understand, this page will help you work out what might be happening and what to do next.
Start here if your PAYG smart meter is causing problems
PAYG smart meters are supposed to make life easier, not harder. When they work properly, they let you top up remotely, use emergency credit, avoid unnecessary engineer visits and stay in better control of your energy.
But when something goes wrong, the impact is immediate. Credit disappears. Supply can go off. Stress levels go through the roof.
Simple rule: if you have paid but the credit is not showing, the issue may be a supplier system delay, account setup problem, communications issue or payment application fault. If your balance is disappearing too quickly, check standing charges, debt recovery and catch-up deductions before assuming the meter itself is faulty.

Debt can appear after a switch, after a move, after missed bills or because arrears are being recovered in the background.

Sometimes the long-term fix is moving away from prepayment, but debt, supplier policy and account history can get in the way.

If your PAYG smart meter is eating credit too fast, ask your supplier what is actually being deducted. Is it live usage, standing charges, debt recovery, catch-up charges, or an account setup issue?
If they cannot explain it clearly or give you a proper next step, use the complaint letter generator to put the issue in writing.
