If your smart meter display (IHD) is not working, blank, or showing incorrect information, you’re not alone.
This is a very common issue in UK homes. In many cases, the smart meter itself is working — but the display inside the home has lost connection or stopped updating.
This guide explains what’s happening and what you should do next.
What’s actually happening?
Your In-Home Display (IHD) connects to your smart meter using a short-range wireless network called the HAN (Home Area Network).
If that connection drops or becomes unstable, your display may stop working — even though your meter is still recording usage correctly.
What you might notice
- The screen is blank or frozen
- No gas or electric usage is showing
- The display is stuck on old data
- The display says “connecting” or similar
- The information does not match your bill
What should you check first?
- Is the display switched on and charged?
- Is it within range of your electric meter?
- Has it recently been unplugged or moved?
- Did the issue start after installation or recently?
Sometimes simply moving the display closer to the meter or restarting it can restore the connection.
Common causes of IHD problems
- Loss of HAN connection between the display and meter
- Display too far away from the meter
- Display battery or power issues
- Display not paired properly during installation
- Temporary communication drop
Does this affect my bill?
In most cases, no.
The display is only for your information. Even if it is not working, your smart meter may still be sending readings to your supplier.
However, if your display is not working and your bills are also estimated, this could point to a wider communication issue.
When do you need an engineer?
You may need a replacement or follow-up visit if:
- The display has never worked since installation
- It will not reconnect after multiple attempts
- The device is faulty or damaged
In some cases, suppliers will send a replacement display rather than an engineer.
What’s happening behind the scenes
- The IHD has lost connection to the HAN network
- The electric meter is still working, but not communicating with the display
- The display may not have been paired correctly during installation
This is why your energy system can still work even when the display does not.
What the engineer (squad) would check
- Whether the IHD is connected to the HAN network
- Distance between the display and the meter
- If the display was commissioned properly
- Whether the device itself is faulty
What usually fixes it
- Moving the display closer to the meter
- Restarting or resetting the IHD
- Re-pairing the display to the meter
- Replacing the display if faulty
Could you be owed compensation?
If your smart meter system is not working properly overall and the issue has not been resolved, it may be worth asking your supplier about compensation.
This usually applies more to meter communication issues than display problems alone.
Still not working?
If your smart meter display is not working, the most important thing is to confirm whether your meter itself is still sending readings.
