Smart Meters for Solar, EV & Batteries — Problems, Fixes & How It All Works

Smart Meters for Solar, EV & Batteries — Problems, Fixes & How It All Works

Why your smart meter is the engine behind everything

Solar panels, home batteries, export payments, EV charging and smart tariffs all depend on one thing working properly: your smart meter and the data flowing through it.

When that chain breaks, things stop behaving the way they should. Export payments go missing. Cheap EV rates may not apply. Batteries charge at the wrong time. Savings fall short of what you were promised.

This section helps you work out what’s going wrong, what to check first, and which tools or guides to use next.

Why This Matters More Than Most People Realise

You were sold the dream: generate your own power, store it, use it smartly, get paid for what you do not use, and charge your car for pennies overnight.

But most people are never clearly told this: your smart meter is the system that makes all of that work properly.

It is not just a box that shows readings. It is the link between your home, your supplier, your tariff, your export setup and your billing data.

If the meter is not commissioned correctly, stops communicating, loses smart functionality after switching, or is not sending half-hourly data properly, the result can be:

  • Missing export payments
  • Wrong tariff charging
  • Cheap EV rates not applying
  • Battery charging at the wrong time
  • Lower savings than expected
  • Confusing bills and app data

In many cases, the problem is fixable — but only once you know where the chain has broken.

Start Here: 4 Checks Before You Panic

1. Check whether the problem is export, tariff, charging or data

Work out what is actually going wrong first. Are you missing SEG payments? Is your cheap EV rate not applying? Is your battery charging at the wrong time? Is your app data missing or incorrect?

2. Check whether your smart meter is fully working in smart mode

A meter can still show numbers on the wall but not be communicating properly in the background. That matters because solar, export and smart tariffs depend on proper data flow — not just a screen that lights up.

3. Check whether the issue started after a switch, install or tariff change

A lot of solar, EV and export problems begin after a supplier switch, a smart meter installation, a tariff move, or a commissioning/setup problem.

4. Check whether money is actually being lost

Sometimes the system looks fine on the surface, but you are quietly losing value through missing export payments, wrong charging windows, or lower-than-expected savings.

Problems We Cover in This Section

1. Export Payment Problems

If your SEG payments are missing, delayed or lower than expected, the issue may sit with the export setup, smart meter data, supplier handling, or missing account configuration.

2. Smart Tariff & EV Charging Problems

Time-of-use tariffs, cheap overnight charging and EV-friendly rates all depend on the right tariff setup and the right smart meter data. If either side is wrong, the savings do not appear properly.

Guides coming soon: cheap EV rate not applying, overnight charging not showing properly, half-hourly data problems.

3. Battery Storage Problems

Batteries depend on correct tariff timing, correct smart meter data and the right home setup. If any of that is wrong, charging and export behaviour can drift away from what you expected.

Guides coming soon: battery charging at wrong time, battery export not being recorded, battery savings lower than expected.

4. Setup / Switching / Commissioning Problems

A surprising number of solar, EV and export issues start after switching supplier, moving into a property, a smart meter exchange, or a setup/configuration issue that no one fully explained at the time.

Guides coming soon: smart meter went dumb after switching, no MCS certificate, CT clamp setup issues, new build export not set up properly.

Why Your Smart Meter Matters More Than Anyone Told You

Here is the part that often gets missed:

Every financially valuable part of modern home energy — export payments, smart tariffs, time-of-use pricing, EV charging and battery optimisation — depends on a smart meter that is:

  • correctly commissioned
  • actively communicating
  • sending the right data to your supplier
  • still working properly after supplier switches and tariff changes

If that chain breaks anywhere, things stop working properly. You may not notice straight away, but over time it can mean missed savings, wrong billing or systems not behaving as they should.

The smart meter is the engine. Everything else depends on it.

Not Sure What’s Gone Wrong?

Start with the health check if you want a quick diagnosis. If you think money is missing, use the underpayment calculator next. If the issue has dragged on or your supplier is getting nowhere, log it in the tracker too.
