If your gas smart meter has stopped working or your supplier says is not sending readings, it’s usually due to a communication or signal issue rather than a fault with the meter itself.
Gas smart meters rely on a connection to your electricity meter and communications hub. If that link fails, the meter may still record usage but won’t send readings automatically.
For a full breakdown of smart meter signal and communication issues, see our guide: Smart Meter Signal & Connectivity Problems
Gas smart meters normally send readings to your energy supplier through the electricity meter and communications hub. If that connection fails, the gas meter may still measure your usage but cannot send the readings automatically.

Signs Your Gas Smart Meter Has Stopped Working
You may notice one or more of the following:
• Your energy supplier says the gas meter is not communicating
• Your in-home display only shows electricity usage
• Your supplier asks you to provide manual gas meter readings
• Your smart meter app stops showing gas consumption.
In many cases the meter is still recording gas usage but the communication link has been lost.

The Most Common Reasons Gas Smart Meters Stop Working
1. The Gas Meter Has Lost Connection to the Electricity Meter
Gas smart meters do not normally connect directly to the national network.
Instead they communicate through the Home Area Network (HAN) created by the electricity meter and communications hub.
If this connection drops, gas readings will stop being sent to your supplier.
⸻
2. The Gas Meter Is Too Far From the Electricity Meter
One of the most common real-world problems happens when:
• the electricity meter is inside the property
• the gas meter is outside in a wall box.
Metal meter boxes, brick walls and distance can weaken the signal between the two meters.
In some installations the gas meter is temporarily placed beside the electricity meter during commissioning. When it is later moved to its permanent location outside, the signal can become unreliable and the gas meter may eventually drop off the network.
⸻
3. The Gas Meter Battery Has Failed
Gas smart meters run on internal batteries designed to last many years.
If the battery begins to fail the meter may stop communicating. In rare cases the meter may even close its internal valve as a safety measure.
Battery failures were seen on some early smart gas meters and normally require a meter replacement.
⸻
4. The Communications Hub Has Failed
The communications hub sits on top of the electricity meter and connects your smart meter system to the national smart meter network.
If the hub fails or loses signal:
• electricity readings may stop
• gas readings will also stop.
Sometimes the WAN light on the communications hub will be flashing red, indicating a communication problem.
⸻
What Your Energy Supplier Will Usually Do
If your gas smart meter stops sending readings, your supplier will normally try to fix the issue remotely first.
This might involve:
• reconnecting the gas meter to the network
• resetting the smart meter communications
• checking the communications hub.
If the problem cannot be fixed remotely, the supplier may arrange for an engineer visit to recommission or replace the equipment.
⸻
Can You Get Compensation?
In the UK, energy suppliers are expected to repair smart meter faults within a reasonable time.
If a smart meter fault is not fixed within 90 days, you may be entitled to compensation under industry rules.
Compensation payments are often £40, with additional payments possible if the delay continues.
